Intensive English Program (IEP)

The Intensive English Program (IEP) at the English Institute for International Students is an academically oriented intensive language study program for degree-seeking students at the University of Tulsa. It is the goal of the program to provide international students with the necessary English language skills and competence to perform successfully at a post-secondary level. All applicants to the program must have been granted conditional admission to the university or receive approval.

Program Organization

The IEP is organized into three levels of study. Students have to meet the admission requirements for acceptance.  For the  2020-2021 academic year students can demonstrate the initial language skill required for admittance thru the submission of a TOEFL score of 50, IELTS score of 5.0 or Duolingo score of 80. All incoming students are required to take the Cambridge Michigan Language Assessment upon arrival, the results of which determine their appropriate level of placement. Students are required to take all classes within a single course level regardless of higher demonstrated achievement in a particular skill area. Course sessions are conducted over a period of 8 weeks. Final exams are given for all levels in orders to assess students’ achievement of learning outcomes.

Classes meet weekly from Monday to Friday, and daily classes include instruction in the functional areas of reading, writing, structure (grammar), and the combined skills of listening and speaking. In addition to regular classes, students have access to an on-campus computer laboratory.

Students who are attending undergraduate and graduate programs at The University of Tulsa can fulfill the university language proficiency requirement through successful completion of the top level of classes.
